For the last two years, the majority of my learning, planning and writing was done on my laptop or the phone. The combination of instant access, typing clearly and digital security made this a comfortable choice.

As I started using technology more mindfully this year, I realised two things:

1. I was using my phone and laptop for easily up to 6 hours a day

2. Anything I jotted onto my phone was followed by a related google search, app use or message.

If I came across an idea for a writing topic, I would either look up the subject in my browser or message it to a friend for their opinion almost straight away. I could (and would) then spend a significant amount of time browsing or messaging ending up with me watching a Youtube video on puppies.

The writing topic had nothing to do with puppies.

One of my top goals this year is to reduce my screen time, the majority of which I spend on reading and writing digitally. I started reading my physical books, that was easy. The difficult part was writing.

As the positive effect of writing on brain activity is well documented, I decided to take the plunge and got a notebook. I promised myself to carry it around everywhere and…
